The operation in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district to rescue people trapped in cable cars suspended hundreds of feet above the ground in a cable car connecting Trikut Hills finally came to a close on the third day Tuesday. Three persons lost their lives in the incident and during the rescue operation – one of them a woman who was injured when the cable cars collided on Sunday, and the other two who fell to their death while being rescued by helicopters (a man fell to his death Monday while a woman died today). At least 12 persons had sustained injuries in the incident and they are admitted to hospitals for treatment. “Of the remaining 15 people trapped in cable cars (as of Monday evening), 14 have been rescued while a woman fell off the chopper during the course of the rescue operation,” Additional Director General of Police RK Mallick told PTI from the spot over the phone. According to Deoghar Civil Surgeon CK Shahi, the woman, identified as 60-year-old Shobha Devi, was declared dead when she was brought to the hospital.
The Indian Air Force has stated: “IAF carried out rescue of stranded passengers at Trikut ropeway in Deoghar, Jharkhand on April 11&12. IAF Mi-17V5 & ALH Mk III heptrs flew 28 sorties & 26 hrs. 35 passengers from 10 cable cars were evacuated. Loss of 2 lives during the rescue missions regretted.”
Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri had said Tuesday that the operation resumed early morning to rescue the persons still trapped in cable cars dangling mid-air. The rescue operation was suspended Monday evening after sunset as the ropeway is located in a densely forested area surrounded by hills. It is difficult to reach the area except by air. Further, the rescue operation was complicated by the fact that the trolleys or cable cars were suspended at heights of up to 1500 feet. Meanwhile, drones were used to supply food and water to the trapped persons in the cable cars.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has meanwhile ordered a high-level probe into the accident. “The government is keeping a close watch on the situation,” Soren said. He said Tuesday evening after the operation ended: “The rescue operation of stranded passengers at Trikut ropeway has finally ended. Teams of NDRF, ITBP and Air Force were involved in carrying out the op. Our priority was to save lives, 2 people died in this incident. A fair investigation will be done.”
The Jharkhand High Court today took suo motu cognizance of the Deoghar ropeway incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The court will hear the matter on April 26. The state government has been asked to file a detailed inquiry report through an affidavit prior to that date.
The ropeway is located at Trikut Hills and the famous Trikutachal Mahadeva Temple and the hermitage of Sage Dayananda are located in the area. According to the Jharkhand tourism department, the Trikut ropeway is the country’s highest vertical ropeway and is about 766-metre long.
