History

Swaminarayan Akshardham was start due to Shri Yogaji Maharaj’s desire to build a temple in Delhi. He conceived this idea around 1968 when he was the spiritual leader of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, popularly known as BAPS. However, it was his successor and the fifth spiritual guru after Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Pramukh Swami Maharaj who started the construction of the temple.

About 60 acres of land has been allot by the Delhi Development Authority and 30 acres by the Uttar Pradesh government for the construction of this temple. Construction began in 2000 and was complete in five years. Located on the banks of the river Yamuna, the Akshardham Temple was opened to the public on November 6, 2005. Pramukh Swami Maharaj inaugurated the temple in the presence of dignitaries like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, L.K. Advani, B.L. Joshi and Dr. Manmohan Singh – then Prime Minister of India.
