Gujarat: Sudarshan Setu, India’s Longest Bridge Inaugurated By PM Modi

The inauguration of Sudarshan Setu by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone for infrastructure development in India. With a total length of 2.32 km, Sudarshan Setu is the longest bridge in India today. This bridge spans the distance between Okha and Beyt Dwarka districts in Gujarat.

What makes Sudarshan Setu different is not only its impressive length, but also its unique design. The entry of the bridge decorated with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and the image of Lord Krishna adds a cultural and spiritual dimension to the bridge. This design choice not only highlights the beauty of Indian culture but also provides a peaceful and meditative experience to those crossing the bridge.

Also, Sudarshan Setu is not only a travel bridge but also a stepping stone for sustainability. By generating one megawatt of electricity, the bridge helps reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy solutions.

With a width of 27.20 meters and a roadway of 2.50 meters on each side, the bridge makes a good place for both pedestrians and cars. Its important position to connect the land of Okha with Beyt Dwarka, an island near the port of Okha, is very important. Beyt Dwarka is about 30 km from Dwarka city, famous for Dwarkadhish temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Formerly known as ‘Signature Bridge’, the structure has been renamed ‘Sudarshan Setu’, reflecting its importance in the cultural order of the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before inaugurating the bridge, highlighted the role of the bridge in promoting connectivity and facilitating development in the region. Before its construction, pilgrims used to take boats to Dwarkadhish temple.

This bridge is seen as a solution to the problems of the villagers and is part of PM Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ development vision. Launched by the Center in 2017, the Sudarshan Setu Bridge aims to ease the traffic problem of pilgrims traveling between Okha and Bet Dwarka. Aimed at developing tourism, saving time and improving access to quality healthcare, Sudarshan Setu is promising for the region.

In addition, PM Modi is expected to start various projects in Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka and Porbandar districts including electrification of 533 km railway and installation of offshore pipeline at Vadinar under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
